Wireless Tutorial

The following tutorial is an introduction to wireless technology and what it takes to initially setup and manage wireless devices. We will look into hardware, software, protocol, and terminology. We will also offer helpful tips along the way. This is in no means an exhaustive how-to on wireless networks and/or devices. It will, however, equip you with the knowledge to take the first step in setting up and managing a wireless environment.

Wireless technology is the current “latest and greatest thing” in technology today. It is exploding exponentially, and the writers of the Wireless standards are having a tough time keeping up! It is a fascinating tool (or toy depending on your view) and has many pluses on its side. To the non-technical person, wireless is “simply magic” or some “deep dark mystical potion” that just make computer communications work. Wireless isn’t that simple. It isn’t terribly complicated either. Like anything, you can make it as difficult as you would like if you drill down enough to the actual nut and bolts of it. This tutorial will drill down a little, but not enough to be confusing.

Wireless is becoming so common, that most if not all laptop computers now offer wireless NIC’s as standard equipment. It is generally expected to have access to wireless devices in all educational facilities and businesses. Wireless is in most Hotels, and even restaurants. Entire cities are implementing wireless access. Wireless is here now! The purpose of this tutorial is to get the Educational Technology Specialist up to speed with this new technology and offer tips and tools to make your job easier.

Enjoy!
